Song for Sunday: The Mom Song

Comedian Anita Renfroe created this song, honoring Mom's by listing "all" the things they say to their kids in a day. So Happy Mothers' Day-- here's a laugh for you!

And just for fun ... the Dadsense song, too

Have a great day, and don't forget to honor your mom!!

Song for Sunday: Faith of Our Mothers

Happy Mother's Day!

Today's "Song for Sunday" is an homage to the faith and love of mothers, especially in the contexts of home and church. We sang it at worship this morning.

The music is the same as that of Faith of Our Fathers and in places I found the lyrics a bit stilted. They are trying to make the point, I think, that mothers' faith is just as good as fathers'. But that point is valid and the song caught me. The phrase that especially grabbed my attention was in the last verse:

"Faith of our mothers, Christian faith, In truth beyond our stumbling creeds, Still serve the home and serve the church..."

I was at the annual meeting of my region of American Baptists and a few times we heard about celebrating love above our theological differences. There are some things that do need to be addressed in the theological realm, but love should be first. Unconditional love, like that of mothers, like that of God.

Faith of Our Mothers

Faith of our mothers, living still
In cradle song and bedtime prayer;
In nursery lore and fireside love,
Thy presence still pervades the air:
Faith of our mothers, living faith!
We will be true to thee to death.

Faith of our mothers, loving faith,
Fount of our childhood's trust and grace,
Oh, may thy consercration prove
Source of a finer, nobler race:
Faith of our mothers, living faith,
We will be true to thee till death.

Faith of our mothers, guiding faith,
For youthful longing, youthful doubt,
How blurred our vision, blind our way,
Thy providential care without:
Faith of our mothers, guiding faith,
We will be true to thee till death.

Faith of our mothers, Christian faith,
Is truth beyond our stumbling creeds,
Still serve the home and save the Church,
And breathe thy spirit through our deeds:
Faith of our mothers, Christian faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

What song helps you celebrate the love of mothers?

How I Spent Mother's Day

This Mother's Day was different.

First, of all, I wasn't home. I woke up in Ocean Park (which is my favorite place on earth). A bunch of us, from Oceanwood and CYC spent the weekend getting the facility ready for the summer camping season. Yesterday, we had a morning worship service and then cleaned up after ourselves and took leave.

My son and I had lunch at Rapid Ray's, a favorite hotdog stand. After that,we built a water diversion system that Jordan designed at the beach.

We headed home and Jordan took care of supper, because everyone up at camp kept reminding him it was Mother's Day and he had to do something nice for me. My husband took us out for ice cream. Then we played Pitch Six, a game that we used to play with my late mother.

It really was a nice day and I feel very blessed to be a Mom.

How was your Mother's Day?

For Mom on Mother's Day

I am reprinting this anonymous poem in honor of my Mom who passed away in March and of all Mothers who are in Heaven. May God bring comfort to those who loved them.

Mothers Who are No Longer Among Us

In tears we saw you sinking,
And watched you pass away.
Our hearts were almost broken,
We wanted you to stay.
But when we saw you sleeping,
So peaceful, free from pain,
How could we wish you back with us,
To suffer that again.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God took you home.

If Roses grow in Heaven,
Lord please pick a bunch for me,
Place them in my Mother's arms
and tell her they're from me.
Tell her I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for awhile.
Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
but there's an ache within my heart
that will never go away.

Don't think of her as gone away
Her journey's just begun
Life holds so many facets
This earth is only one
Just think of her as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years
Think how she must be wishing
That we could know, today
Now nothing but our sadness
Can really pass away
And think of her as living
In the hearts of those she touched
For nothing loved is ever lost
And she is loved so very much.
